F4, Barbie fans unfazed by rains, pricey tickets
Despite the rain, thousands of F4 and Barbie Xu fans lined up for hours outside the Philippine Sports Arena (formerly Ultra) in Pasig City on Saturday for the The Event concert featuring members of the Taiwanese band and their lovely costar in the box-office telenovela Meteor Garden.
This, as the Eastern Police District deployed at least 150 police officers in the area, reportedly not only to prevent any violence by the crowd but also to protect from kidnappers the many rich Chinese Filipinos who were seen attending.
The F4 group has been stirring up a storm of fan devotion in the Philippines after they were introduced through their television drama Meteor Garden.
Giving the concert are F4 members Vanness Wu, who potrays the character Mei Tsuo in Meteor Garden and Ken Zuo, who has the role of Xi Men. With them is fellow drama actor Barbie, who plays Shan Cai in the TV series but is not a member of the F4 singing group.
Eastern police district head Chief Supt. Rolando Sacramento also directed his deputy for operations, Senior Supt. Pedro Nicolas, to strictly implement the “Oplan Sita,” which involves frisking fans and inspecting their bags.
Chaos reigned leading to the concert’s opening as many fans who had tickets found themselves arriving at their seats to find that other fans without tickets had already occupied them. Many fans decried the lack of crowd control and the general failure of the security guards to regulate the entry of fans to the venue. It was reported that the security guards outside had claimed that the security operations pertaining to the interior of the arena was allegedly not their responsibility. Many of the 60,000 fans were dissatisfied with the lack of order at the concert. C. Mocon

“The whole thing was in Chinese. I tried to pretend na naiintindihan ko ang mga sinasabi nila.
“And then, the worst part, hindi man lang sila tumitingin sa akin habang ini-interview ko sila.
I don’t know, baka ganu`n talaga ang ugali nila.
“I didn’t show any behavior naman that merited that kind of response from them. Siguro, dahil nag-English ako, kaya ang feeling ko, ganu`n ang nangyari,” say ni Paolo.
Pero ang pinakamatindi sa lahat ay nu‘ng hindi pinaunlakan si Paolo na magpakuha ng larawan sa mga in-interview niya. Hinangad ni Paolo na magpakuha ng larawan kina Ken at Vic para magamit sa mga press release rito sa Pilipinas.
“For press release purposes lang. Sabi sa akin nu`ng kausap namin do’n, no, no, exception. Gusto ko na ngang tumayo at gusto kong sabihin sa kanila na, ‘Alam mo ba, si Tom Cruise, kinuha ang kamera namin at ginamit para makunan kami.
“Parang what’s the big deal, `di ba?

HOPE I COULD COME BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES Vanness, after the much-awaited concert in the Philippines laid down his comments. (Exclusive at Interactive, Taiwan) We landed the Philippines airport at 1535H via CI635, Friday, I was really exhausted and by the time i knew it I already could see thousands of filipinos right before my eyes. I was not expecting such huge crowd from the airport to the hotel where we stayed in. The warm welcome made was really amazing! There were some rout, there were some pushing, yelling here and there but you couldn't think of it anymore as those were because of the full support they give you! It was indeed a happy feeling. It was an excellent job for the security from the airport to the hotel to the venue where we held our concert, we were excellently taken care of. Ken can't believe we are such popular in the Philippines, I have heard of it already but then seeing it before me eyes, having you, yourself as the witness is really something I am not even expecting! The concert was a success, although there were some chaos, I can't blame those who really wanted to see us up-close, If I could only get down and reach out to all those people, I would have done that with no hesitancy. We only sung 3 LIVE songs each, excluding our duet (Ken and I). At first, we should have sung 7-8 songs, but then it was on our contract that we could only share 3 of our songs each. I did a bonus song to the delight of the crowd. Maybe when we come back to the Philippines once more, now as F4, (I'm hoping we could because I want to come back and have a show there again) it's gonna be an F4 full concert. Yes, we were just guest artists on that show, that's why it was called "The Event"! People there might have already known that from the very beginning. Philippines is a nice place to stay in, very peaceful, not to mention the screaming fans I saw there. But to top it all, they have good hotel service, nice people, great food. I am very flattered and honored to have a show there, me and Ken were really flattered that you have accepted us not only as Mei Zuo or Xi Men but of course as Ken and Vanness! Through this, I would like to thank the people from the Philippines for their warm welcome, for their love and support, really thank you thank you very much from the bottom of my heart! We're really thankful and finally I have come to conquer the Philippines. About the ticket prices of the concert? I have no idea about that, we were invited there, we came and we performed, about the tickets, I guess I have nothing to do with that. All I could say is that I am really happy to have performed in the Philippines where Meteor Garden re-lives, and we're so much thankful for your support to Meteor Garden, to us, F4 and we're hoping you would support us in our upcoming endeavors. We left Manila via Flight CI 632 before lunch time.

"I'LL NEVER FORGET THE FILIPINO FANS" "I am so thankful to the fans who have been supporting us, most especially during our recent show in the Philippines. One way or the other, I was not expecting such warmth and hospitality showed to us by the Filipino fans. I am also thankful to the people behind our popularity there, for showing the Meteor Garden 1 and 2. I believe Meteor Garden 2 is still being shown on TV, I just am not aware which episode is showing at present. Through the scenario I have seen, it was really difficult to say goodbye to the millions of people after the show, goodbye has always been the saddest part after an overwhelming experience, but as I said, we surely will be back and I will tell ZaiZai and Baolong about this one experience Ken and I had and I'm sure the 2 of them would want to be a part of the enjoyment we once had in the future. I remember when I was being interviewed, I heard a ringtone and I even said it was a familiar tone, I kept silent about it but it was Yan Huo De Jie! We were really amazed by the feedback, I cant say anything more but thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, our hearts."

IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL RAINY EVENT Taiwan, Hongkong and Japan fans of F4 have been informed how huge the concert of F2 was when they performed there for a one-night event on September 13, 2003. First time in the Philippines, Vanness Wu was very delighted to see his filipino fans cheered for him and screamed his name while performing For Juliet and Body Will Sing. "I was not expecting the huge crowd before my eyes right before the concert. I was waiting for my turn at the dressing room which was situated at the back of the stage when I saw the crowd screaming and shouting! It seems to be boring to perform in a crowd with no positive response, but there in the Philippines, it was truly unforgettable. But, the worse of it was when it rained late in the afternoon and apparently the concert-goers were wet and I really was very appreciative because in spite of the heavy rain people stayed and supported us on that one-night special event. The stage was wet as well but remembering the "Looking For Juliet" video which we did, I managed to surpass dancing regardless of how slippery the stage was, over all, it was a success! And I am really very thankful to the fans who stayed with us from the start of the concert to pass 12 midnight! I pity those who waited outside the venue since morning since we have been getting feedback on the crowd, and then after waiting for several hours, they were not able to get in. I felt sorry for those, but in a way, for a lively crowd, energetic audience, even if we sung chinese songs, some managed to participate in the singing. I have also seen some banners written in Chinese and it really felt so good" The concert was the most successful concert by an asian artist in the Philippines. And as we have heard, the gorgeous Vanness Wu, Ken Zhu, Jerry Yan and Vic Zhou might hold a concert by February or March 2004 in line with their 3rd Album release early next year. For an Asian Tour in the Philippines, lets expect a multiple times huge crowd and we hope that a concert like this be held on a closed and covered venue for the protection of the people most especially the kids.

Here's NEWSWEEK's article on F4 Source: www.msnbc.com/news/966296.asp?cp1=1#BODYThe Boys in the Band F4 may be the first Mandarin pop band that all of Asia can love. And they’re helping to make Chinese culture cool By Alexandra A. Seno NEWSWEEK INTERNATIONAL Sept. 22 issue — Many southeast Asians are full of worries about China, ranging from the effects of the region’s new trade pact to how to compete with Beijing for foreign investment. But for tens of millions of young Asians, there is a far more burning question at hand: who is the cutest member of F4—Jerry, Vic, Ken or Vanness? THE BOY-BAND pop singers may be Taiwanese, but they sing in Mandarin and have Southeast Asia deep in the throes of a love affair with all things Chinese. Says Indonesian entertainment executive Daniel Tumiwa: “Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kongers. For ordinary people here, it doesn’t matter; it’s just Chinese to them. It makes no difference. F4 is huge, huge, huge.” Not to mention hot, hot, hot. F4 is the first Mandarin pop band to win a devoted—some would say fanatic—pan-Asian audience. In many places, they are even bigger than the local acts—highly unusual in Asia’s widely segmented music market. Pop tastes in east Asia have traditionally been split, with the north looking to Japan and Hong Kong, and the south to their home markets. F4 has radically altered the equation. They’ve sold 3.5 million albums—an astonishing number on a continent where pirated CDs are the norm. In Manila last week, —fans paid up to $200—the equivalent of several months’ salary—to see F4 members sing and dance live. Their faces loom large on billboards advertising Pepsi along Bangkok’s expressways. On streets throughout the region, children can be heard belting F4 lyrics in passable Mandarin. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen a group actually conquering all markets here,” says Mishal Varma, Singapore-based vice president for talent relations at MTV Asia. “No one else has crossed over the way they have.” Their staggering appeal is not easy to explain—even among music experts. A la ‘N Sync, they don’t play any instruments and they are not great singers. Few people even know what they’re singing about. But the four twentysomething band members—Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Ken Zhu and Vanness Wu—belt out frothy tunes with a bubble-gum beat, and possess clean-cut good looks that have landed them on magazine covers, posters, key chains, T shirts and the bedroom walls of countless teenage girls. Indeed, their most committed fans know not just their birth dates but their blood types as well. They seem to possess that elusive blend of charisma and good timing that strikes only rarely among musicians. “In life, there comes only one Elvis Presley, one Ricky Martin, one F4,” says Varma. Their wholesome image is a big selling point. In person, the bandmates tend to be exceptionally polite. During an interview, Wu, the only F4 member who speaks fluent English, tosses off lines like, “The Vanness dream is to take care of my family one day so they don’t have to work so hard.” Such emphasis on family values plays well with young Asians. “F4 represents something they can aspire to within reach,” says Ian Stewart, CEO of The Filter Group, an Asian trend consultancy. “Compared with Robbie Williams, Asians can connect more with F4.” The band’s rise began with “Meteor Garden,” a slick television drama launched in Taiwan two years ago. Based on a Japanese comic book, the series revolves around a group of Taiwanese students nicknamed F4—”Flower Four”—because they are so pretty. The show, massively popular in Taiwan, also turned into a runaway hit on Southeast Asian TV when dubbed or subtitled in local languages. The program ran for two seasons. Like many Asian actors, the four boys also sang and danced. They quickly released two albums under Sony Music, and began playing to sellout crowds from Hong Kong to Manila. Today, in addition to touring, making TV appearances and hanging out together, the members are also busy working on solo careers. “We want to grow,” says Wu, who just finished shooting his first film, a Hong Kong martial arts movie. Wu laughs when asked if he feels famous. Three years ago, he was living in his native Los Angeles (he is named after the famous street in L.A. and San Francisco) and working as a customer-service rep for a phone company. Then he decided to indulge his passion and pursue a show-business career in Taiwan, where his parents were born. For the first year, he slept on friends’ couches in Taipei. Now, though he’s glad to have his own place, he says the band is still adjusting to its stardom. “We had —never met until ‘Meteor Garden’,” he says. “Our personalities are so different, which is probably why our fans like us.” Indeed, there seems to be something for everyone. Wu says he thinks he’s seen as the extrovert, Jerry Yan is the funny but mercurial one, Vic Zhou is quiet but “off the wall” and Ken Zhu is “cool and collected—but a deep thinker.” The members have turned into unwitting ambassadors for greater China. Thanks largely to F4, Thais, Filipinos and Indonesians—not generally known for their interest in contemporary Chinese culture—are embracing it with a vengeance. In Jakarta, “There is growing acceptance that Chinese boys are good looking,” says Tumiwa. “It’s quite a shift here.” Indonesia has had a checkered history with its Chinese population, highlighted by anti-Chinese riots and targeted violence. Now, the only mobs are those lining up to see F4 perform in concert. Young people are adopting F4’s style of dress, which tends to be casual with a flair, such as tight jeans and fitted white shirts. Fans have also copied their trademark long hairstyles. Says Bangkok hotel clerk Praphaphorn Sithuha, an admitted F4 fanatic: “F4 has good style, they sing well and are very funny.” The band members have also sparked an unlikely interest in the Mandarin language. “Now my workers are listening to Chinese songs all day long,” says Charlie Clement, a flower-farm owner in the central Philippines. “They sing along but don’t understand.” At least one is going even further; Thai fan Praphaphorn has a friend who was so inspired by the group that she enrolled in Chinese language lessons. Not surprisingly, everyone is trying to discover the next F4. TV executives in Manila, for example, have been snapping up other Taiwanese soaps, like “Lavender” and “MVP Valentine.” In Jakarta, the Taiwan all-male hip-hop group Energy, which also sings only in Mandarin, has been performing to packed crowds. “They have good music,” says Harry Hui, Asia president for Universal Music. ”[But] teenagers in Southeast Asia don’t yet think of China as a source of cool.” Just give them time.

Saturday, September 20, 2003 The other of half of F4 to conquer Manila in November MARK your calendars, F4 fans. Jerry Yan and Vic Zhou, the two F4 members who didn’t make it to the first F4 concert in Manila last Saturday, will have their turn on November 29. The previous concert, which was dubbed The Event, starred Yan and Zhou’s Meteor Garden co-stars Barbie Xu, Ken Zhou and Vaness Wu. This early, concert insiders have predicted the second will be as big, if not a bigger success than The Event, despite the negative publicity of the latter. A source said that Joed Serrano’s Vigslim Entertainment will not be doing the producing chores and will instead attend to the selling of tickets. Likewise, the ULTRA Football field will no longer serve as the venue. The setting of the next show will be the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. Jerry and Vic will perform on a stage, which is to be built at the center of the coliseum. Ticket prices have been set at P8,000, P5,000, P3,000 and P1,000. That’s a bargain considering you won’t be exposed to to the elements. -- Gerry Cadiz www.manilatimes.net/national...030920ent2.htmlbut in my opinion only jerry will be here because its a bench fashion show... -may-

The night before, Ken and Vanness attended the quan qiu bang at Shanghai. Andy Lau and Stephenie Sun appeared to be the largest winners. And when F2, Ken Chu and Vanness Wu represented F4 to collect their prize, the whole stadium screamed, fans were screaming at the top of their voices. Vanness and Ken recently went to the Phillipines to have a mini concert. As too many fans were at the airport and to avoid chaos, the crew specially arranged for 2 fake F2s to walk out so as to allow the 2 real ones to leave the airport in a secret passage. Ken claims that he does know about this while Vanness does not. However, both of them agrees that tin order for everyone to be safe, this must be done. Vanness commented that those local fans were very heartwarming, more than 3 million fans attended while some even climbed up the ladder to watch. When asked about rumours both of them fighting for a girl, they deduced it as WU LIAO. When asked if they have shown the girl to his mother, Ken said, "His mom owns a beauty salon, of course he did." When they were at the Qing Gong Yan the night before, they were ask if they were used to crazy fans, ken said, "There are ltos of thigns that we cannot get use in our whole lifetime, just like using your hands to carve a blackboard.
