Sleepless at Jerry Yan concert
CHUVANNESS By Cecile Zamora
The Philippine STAR 11/14/2004
Like most Jerry Yan fans, Yam, a 19-year-old student from De La
Salle University, became a fan of the Taiwanese pop star after
seeing him in the hit series Meteor Garden.
Yam was one of 2,000-plus fans that came to the NBC Tent last Friday
to see Jerry Yan live as Bench endorser.
Prior to this event, Yam had already seen Jerry live on four other
occasions:
1) The first Bench and Jerry event at Le Pavillion (she won a ticket
online);
2) Happy New Year F4 concert at Ultra (Cost: P2,500);
3) She flew with 32 members of Love Ko Jerry fans club to Taiwan to
join a worldwide fan gathering for Jerry's new CD. (Damage:
P40,000);
4) Last Halloween weekend, about 20 members of Love Ko Jerry flew to
Hong Kong for a Pepsi event at Harbour City (Cost: US$300).
To see Jerry for a fifth time, Yam, like most other fans, had to buy
seven special-issue Bench tees at around P299 each, for a grand
total of about P2,100.
Upon purchasing the tees, "they give you this Idol Book 2 of
pictures of Jerry. You bring that to the event and that's your
pass," explained Nicole, a 28-year-old product development manager
for a clothing company.
Others won tickets through a contest sponsored by ABS-CBN and MYX,
and as for me, well, I simply asked my editor for this assignment.
Not all fans are as privileged. While waiting at the queue, Nicole
spoke to a girl whose aunt in the US sponsored her seven T-shirts.
You could call it early Christmas shopping. I overheard one of the
fans at the restroom across the street how each of her family
members were getting a Bench tee for Christmas.
Camping Out
Though the event was for 3 p.m. on November 5, fans started queuing
and camping in front of the Tent as early as midnight of November 2.
Groups from several fan clubs lined up in shifts to ensure their
place in the queue.
The weather was not so good. To protect the fans, Bench rented tents
and portalets for their use.
According to a newsletter circulated on the Internet, "When Mr. Ben
Chan visited the venue on the evening of November 4, he waved to the
crowd lined up across the street. Despite the rain, the crowd gave
back a loud and enthusiastic cheer.
"Two ladies in the line who knew Mr. Chan personally crossed the
street and spoke to him. They informed him that fans were camped out
as early as November 2 and had been organizing themselves. He seemed
to be impressed and even sent out Bench Potato Chips to the girls at
around 12:30 a.m. to show his support."
Yam and members of Love Ko Jerry were lining up since 4 a.m. of
November 2. One of them checked in a room along Makati Avenue where
fellow members could shower and freshen up.
"We brought our own bench and we had a mat,"said Yam, who camped out
on the grassy area. "I didn't sleep, it was noisy. People were
constantly fighting about the line about people making singit. The
portalet started to smell. We used the restroom near Fitness First.
One of our group mates ordered Jollibee breakfast at 8 a.m."
November 5
On the day of the event, Nicole's friend called at 9:30 a.m. "She
was there na. She said I think you have to be here early, ang daming
tao na. I got there at 1:30 p.m. Ang haba ng line. But they were
very organized, guards everywhere. I went to the end of the line.
"Then the guards would come and say give me your book and they write
your number. Mine was 1015. More people were coming and by 2 p.m.
there was a long line behind me," said Nicole.
According to Bench, 2,158 books were given out. At P2,100 per
customer, do the math.
By 1 p.m., Yam and her group were inside. "By that time it was
raining really hard, ang daming nabasa. Kawawa yung iba."
I arrived at 2:30 pm and stayed with the fans at the back of the
Tent. Ces Drilon and Keren Pascual were drawing out names from a
raffle where 300 fans, including those from Hong Kong, USA, and
Japan, could move to the VIP section and meet and greet Jerry Yan.
At 3 p.m. a lively Bench and Herbench fashion show directed by Robby
Carmona began, but fans were simply anxious to see the main
attraction.
Then Jerry appeared and the screaming began. Over our heads came a
sea of cell phones and all sorts of film and digital and video cams.
From my point of view, I saw Jerry as big as my thumb. Not bad. When
I saw the Pope in Luneta he was as big as this letter O.
He was a sight to behold. Jerry is one celeb who doesn't disappoint.
I have seen him three times in person and always, he is larger than
life, more beautiful than his pictures or on TV.
He wore a green Bench tee with the print "Merry Jerry" and sang two
songs from his new album, "Jerry For You": One Meter and Gravity.
After this, a very short question and answer portion where it was
revealed that he has renewed his Bench contract for another year.
He spent one hour shaking hands and signing CDs for lucky fans
before heading back to his hotel.
Tight Schedule
I tried to get a scoop from Bench, what Jerry did, what he ate, but
there was no scoop.
He arrived at 11:30 on that day with an entourage of four: a makeup
artist, two managers, and a very talented hairstylist who makes him
look so good.
From the airport his group checked in at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel
where he rested and freshened up. Ben Chan came over to formally
welcome him.
Then he was driven to the Tent just in time for his appearance,
after which he left, rested, and did two interviews: one for Rated K
with Korina Sanchez, and another for ABS-CBN.
In less than 24 hours after he arrived, he was gone. He left very
early on a 7 a.m. flight for another event in Shanghai.
